Getting Started

First Launch

When you first open Equitem, you'll be guided through a short welcome carousel and setup flow:

  1. Welcome Carousel — swipe through an overview of the app's main features, then tap "Get Started".
  2. Profile Setup — enter your name, choose your experience level, select your riding disciplines, and optionally add a profile photo and rider equipment.
  3. First Horse — add your first horse with a name, breed, age, height, sex, photo, and optionally select their equipment.

You can skip setup and come back to it later. The app works right away.

Main Tabs

The app has four main tabs along the bottom:

  • Dashboard — an at-a-glance view of your day: hero banner for your selected horse, today's events, recent sessions, upcoming care tasks, training load, and a quick-add button.
  • Horses — browse all your horses as hero image cards. Tap a card to open the full horse profile with gallery, timeline, equipment, and quick actions.
  • Log — a searchable and filterable list of all your training sessions across all horses.
  • Calendar — three sub-tabs: a weekly calendar view, training routines builder, and monthly schedule generator.

Onboarding Checklist

After initial setup, a checklist card appears on your Dashboard to guide you through key actions: adding a horse, logging your first session, scheduling a care task, creating a nutrition plan, and planning an event. The checklist automatically detects your progress and dismisses itself once you've completed 4 or more steps.

Managing Horses

Adding a Horse

  1. Go to the Horses tab.
  2. Tap the + button in the top-right corner.
  3. Fill in the horse's name (required), breed, age, height, and sex.
  4. Optionally add a profile photo from your camera or photo library.
  5. Toggle "Assign me as rider" if you are the horse's primary rider.
  6. Tap Save.

Horse Profile

Tap any horse card to view their full profile, which includes:

  • Hero Header — large photo with name, breed, age, height, and sex.
  • Summary — recent session count, care task status, and key stats.
  • Equipment — all equipment assigned to this horse.
  • Gallery — photos from all sessions and health incidents.
  • Quick Actions — buttons to log a session, add care, nutrition, health log, or equipment.
  • Timeline — a chronological feed of all activities, events, and care records.

Editing & Deleting a Horse

To edit, open the horse's profile and tap Edit in the top-right corner. To delete, scroll to the bottom of the horse's profile and tap the red Delete button. A confirmation will ask you to confirm — this permanently removes the horse and all associated sessions, health records, care tasks, nutrition plans, feed logs, and equipment.

Logging Sessions

Creating a Session

  1. Tap the + button on the Dashboard, or go to Log tab and tap +, or use Log Session from a horse's Quick Actions.
  2. Select a horse from the picker.
  3. Choose an activity type — activities are organised into Riding Disciplines (dressage, show jumping, eventing, western, etc.), Training Focus (flatwork, pole work, conditioning, etc.), Ground Training (lunging, liberty, long-reining, etc.), and Behaviour & Education.
  4. Set the date and time, duration (in 5-minute increments), and intensity (Easy, Medium, Hard).
  5. Optionally add a goal, reflections (what went well and what to improve), notes, and ratings for both horse and rider (1–5 stars).
  6. Optionally tag your location (auto-detected with your permission) and select equipment used.
  7. Attach photos from your camera or photo library.
  8. Use the microphone button next to text fields for voice-to-text dictation.
  9. Tap Save.

Your most frequently used activity types appear at the top for quick selection.

Session Log

The Log tab shows all your sessions across all horses. You can:

  • Search by keyword in the search bar.
  • Filter by horse, activity type, intensity, or date range using the filter bar.
  • Tap any session to view full details or edit it.

Logging from a Planned Event

When you have a planned event on your calendar, you can log it as a completed session directly. The session form will pre-fill details from the event, and the event's status will automatically update to "Completed".

Health & Care

Care Tasks

Care tasks help you stay on top of routine horse care. To add one:

  1. Use the Quick Add button on the Dashboard, or tap Add Care from a horse's Quick Actions.
  2. Select a horse and choose a care type — options include Daily Care (feeding, grooming, rug change), Health & Veterinary (vaccination, dental, worming, vet, medications), Hoof & Body Care (farrier, physio, chiro, massage), and Tack & Equipment (saddle fit, bridle fit, gear maintenance).
  3. Set a due date and optionally add notes and a reminder notification.
  4. Set a recurrence if the task repeats (e.g. every 6 weeks for farrier, every 3 months for worming). When you mark a recurring task as complete, a new task is automatically created for the next due date.

Overdue care tasks appear highlighted on your Dashboard so you never miss one.

Health Incidents

Record health issues, injuries, or illnesses:

  1. Open a horse's profile and tap Health Log in Quick Actions.
  2. Tap + to add a new incident.
  3. Enter a description, set the severity (Minor, Moderate, Serious, Critical), and record treatment details.
  4. Attach photos to document the incident visually.
  5. Update the status as treatment progresses: Open → Under Treatment → Cleared → Archived.

Nutrition

Nutrition Plans

Create a feeding plan for each horse:

  1. Open a horse's profile and tap Nutrition in Quick Actions.
  2. Set up a nutrition plan with feed items, amounts, and units.
  3. Plans serve as a reference for daily feeding.

Feed Logs

Record daily feeds to track what each horse is actually eating:

  1. Use the Quick Add button on the Dashboard, or go through the horse's Nutrition view.
  2. Add individual feed items with name, amount, and unit.
  3. Add notes about feeding conditions or observations.

Calendar & Routines

Calendar View

The Calendar tab shows a weekly grid with all your planned events, sessions, care tasks, and feed logs. Features include:

  • Week navigation — swipe or tap arrows to move between weeks.
  • Week summary tiles — quick stats for the week at a glance.
  • Week insights — training load analysis for the current week.
  • Tap the + button to plan a new event.

Planning Events

Plan future events such as competitions, clinics, lessons, camps, trail rides, transport days, and more. Over 25 event types are available across Competitive, Training, Social & Recreational, Logistics & Admin, and Horse Lifecycle categories.

  1. From the Calendar tab, tap +.
  2. Select a horse, event type, and set the date and time.
  3. Add location, notes, and an optional reminder notification.
  4. Events sync with your device calendar if you grant calendar permission.

Training Routines

Build reusable weekly training routines:

  1. Go to Calendar tab → Routines sub-tab.
  2. Tap + to create a new routine.
  3. Give it a name and assign it to a horse.
  4. Add activities for each day of the week — set the activity type, duration, and intensity for each.
  5. Routines can be used to auto-generate monthly schedules.

Monthly Schedules

Generate a month's worth of planned events from your routines:

  1. Go to Calendar tab → Schedule sub-tab.
  2. Select a routine, horse, and the target month.
  3. Tap Generate to create planned events for every matching day.
  4. Regenerating a month replaces previously generated events (manually created events are preserved).

Insights & Analytics

Accessing Insights

Insights are available from the Dashboard (tap the insights banner) or through the horse's profile. The Insights view lets you select a horse and a time range (7, 14, or 30 days).

What You'll See

  • Riding Streak — your current consecutive-days streak of logging sessions.
  • Fitness Score (0–100) — calculated from five factors: training volume, intensity balance, consistency, rider/horse rating trends, and recovery. Labelled as Building, Moderate, Fit, or Peak.
  • Overload Alerts — warnings when you've had too many hard sessions in a short window, or when weekly duration has spiked more than 35% over the previous week.
  • Weekly Summary — total sessions, total minutes, average duration, and intensity mix breakdown.
  • Training Frequency Chart — sessions per day visualised over time.
  • Intensity Balance Chart — easy/medium/hard distribution trends.
  • Health Summary — open incidents, care task completion rate, overdue tasks, and severity breakdown.
  • Nutrition Summary — total feed logs and average items per log.

The ideal intensity balance is approximately 50% easy, 30% medium, and 20% hard sessions — the app tracks how close you are to this.

Training Load Banner

The Dashboard shows a training load banner when relevant — it highlights your weekly session count and flags if you're in an overload pattern so you can adjust your schedule.

Equipment Tracking

Horse Equipment

Track all equipment for each horse — saddles, bridles, bits, girths, boots, rugs, halters, and more:

  1. Open a horse's profile and tap Equipment in Quick Actions.
  2. Tap + to add new equipment.
  3. Enter the equipment type, name, brand, condition (New to Needs Replacement), purchase date, and notes.
  4. Optionally add a photo.

Rider Equipment

Track your own gear (helmet, boots, body protector, gloves, etc.) from your Rider Profile in Settings. Rider equipment is managed separately from horse equipment and can be tagged when logging sessions.

Equipment in Sessions

When logging a session, you can select which equipment (both horse and rider) was used. This helps you track usage patterns and know when gear might need replacing.

Settings & Preferences

Rider Profile

Access your rider profile from Settings → tap your name at the top. Here you can update your name, biography, experience level, riding disciplines, profile photo, and location. You can also view and manage your rider equipment and see which horses you're assigned to.

Appearance

Choose between System, Light, or Dark theme. You can also toggle Hide Help Buttons to remove the floating help (?) buttons from all screens.

Reset All Data

Found in SettingsData section. This permanently deletes all horses, sessions, care tasks, photos, and other data from your device. This action cannot be undone.

In-App Help

Most screens in the app have a floating ? button in the bottom-right corner. Tap it to see tips and guidance specific to that screen. You can step through the tips or dismiss them. If you prefer a cleaner look, hide these buttons from Settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my data stored in the cloud?

No. All your data is stored locally on your device. Nothing is sent to external servers. Your data stays entirely private.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Equitem Life works immediately — no sign-up, no login, no account required. A local profile is created automatically when you first open the app.

Can I track multiple horses?

Yes. You can add as many horses as you like, each with their own profile, sessions, health records, nutrition plans, and equipment.

How do I add photos?

You can attach photos from your library or take new ones using your camera. Photos can be added to sessions, horse profiles, health incidents, and equipment records. All photos are stored locally on your device.

How does voice-to-text work?

Text fields for session notes, goals, and reflections have a microphone button. Tap it to start dictating — the app uses Apple's built-in speech recognition to convert your voice to text. Requires microphone and speech recognition permissions.

What activity types are available?

Over 30 activity types across four categories: Riding Disciplines (dressage, show jumping, eventing, western, reining, endurance, trail, barrel racing, etc.), Training Focus (flatwork, pole work, conditioning, speed work, etc.), Ground Training (lunging, long-reining, liberty, desensitisation, etc.), and Behaviour & Education (young horse starting, re-training, confidence building, etc.).

What care task types are supported?

Over 25 care types across four categories: Daily Care (feeding, grooming, rug change, turnout), Health & Veterinary (vaccination, dental, worming, vet, medications, injury treatment), Hoof & Body Care (farrier, hoof trim, physio, chiro, massage), and Tack & Equipment (saddle fit, bridle fit, gear maintenance).

Can I set recurring care tasks?

Yes. When creating a care task, set a recurrence interval (e.g. every 6 weeks, every 3 months). When you mark a recurring task as complete, a new task is automatically created for the next due date.

How does the fitness score work?

The fitness score (0–100) is calculated from five factors: training volume (are you riding enough?), intensity balance (is your easy/medium/hard mix healthy?), consistency (how regular is your riding streak?), rating trends (are horse and rider ratings improving?), and recovery (are you leaving enough rest between hard sessions?). It updates as you log more sessions.

What are overload alerts?

The app warns you if you've logged 3 or more hard sessions within 5 days, or if your weekly training duration has spiked more than 35% over the previous week. These alerts help you avoid overtraining.

Do events sync with my phone calendar?

Yes, if you grant calendar permission. Planned events can be synced with your device calendar so they appear alongside your other appointments.

Can I use location tagging?

Yes. When logging a session, the app can detect your current location (with your permission) and tag the session with a place name and coordinates for your records. Location data is stored locally and never transmitted.

What happens if I delete the app?

Since all data is stored locally on your device, uninstalling the app will permanently delete all your data. There is no cloud backup to restore from. We recommend keeping the app installed to preserve your records.

How do I reset all my data?

Go to the Settings tab and scroll to the Data section. Tap "Reset All Data" to permanently delete all horses, sessions, photos, and other data from your device.

Does the app use tracking or analytics?

No. Equitem Life does not use any third-party analytics, advertising SDKs, or device tracking. We do not collect your advertising identifier. The app makes no network requests.

What permissions does the app need?

All permissions are optional: Camera (photos), Photo Library (select/save images), Calendar (event sync), Location (session tagging), Microphone & Speech Recognition (voice-to-text), and Notifications (care task reminders). The app works without any of these, though some features will be unavailable.

How do I report a bug?

Go to SettingsHelpReport a Bug. Select a category, describe the issue, and the app will compose a pre-filled email with your device info included.
